More exploring. Much better proportions on the couple of the sketches that work. Thought I'd post the others to show the trial and error. Scribbles to work through problems. I love seeing a process of how others work. I find it fascinating. Unfortunately, I don't have perfect drawings, hence all the attempts. But this process is all about seeing which shapes work together and which don't and learning from that.

Here's a couple more. The bottom one is again too lanky, but I like the lines in it.
Still searching.

Here's someone you might want to check out. He's Aidan Harte. He works for a cool looking studio in Ireland called Cartoon Saloon. Love his illustrations. So much variety too. Click his name to get the link.
I'd usually do a whole bunch of really quick sketches/ruffs of the character just to get a feel for her. Some more sucessful than others. The botom page she is more lanky. I prefer the proportions in the top pic. More appealing. Anyway, you can see some of my process here. Figuring things out. Loads to explore.

So I've decided to call her Molly. She looks like a Molly. A couple of people asked me how I came about drawing her. Well it came out of a gesture class that happens at work, taught by Dave Pimentel. He teaches the ways of Walt Stanchfield. You can find his words of wisdom on Jim Hull's Seward Street blog. There was a twenties theme, and two fantastic models. I started doodling around at home and she popped out of the pen. I'm still trying to find her, so you'll be able to see the progression of what will work and what won't. I'll be finding out what shapes and proportions will be appealing, so I'll keep posting so you can see the progress over time as an experiment.

It's always amazed me how using a different type of pen changes things a little. It just gives it a different feel.
Twenties girl
With hair a curl
Wishing for romance
Hope you'll find
A guy that's kind
Who'll ask you up to dance

Orange Bot
You sure have got
A little rust
But not a lot
We'll fix you up
With bits of glue
And soon you'll feel
Just like brand new

Copper Bot
You sure have got
A smile that should be seen
T'was your plan
Not to tan
And in the rain turn green.

Oh Henry, why are you so blue
With arms as long as these?
For you could pick some apples
From the tallest apple trees
For apples make you happiest
When they are red and green
I didn't draw an apple tree
Because I'm really mean

Don't worry friends, I haven't gone all sappy on you. Just building you up to part two of Float. (See two posts down.)
This is what happened after he dumped her. So sad.
