MERRY CHRISTMAS

Merry Christmas everyone. This is one of Santa's helpers. Hope you've been good. Thanks for visiting this ol' blog through the year and if you took the time to leave a comment or two, well, you just make my day :)

This will probably be the last post of the year. What an interesting year art wise it was for me. Three of the highlights...... my 3D images and book changed everything for me and I met a ton of new people because of it. I had the honour of been asked to be part of The Totoro Forest Project, and I had a Gallery show. What a rockin' year. Thanks all for the support.
I just joined Facebook too, so if you're in there look me up.

I'll see you all after the holidays!

BUTTERFLY TATTOO

Hey Everyone, glad you liked the last brushwork post. There'll be more of these to come. In the meantime, this happened.

My best friend wanted a tattoo for her birthday and asked me to design it. Fab!!!
I get the odd email asking about designing tattoos, but this was the first time it was going to be done, and it's huge, huge honor for me.

We booked in to get the tattoo, and on Saturday the tattoo was completed. Fascinating and very cool to see the whole process in action. Of course, the copyright and web site was just for this post. :)

Brushwork

Hello all. Hmmmm, things look a little different around here. Thought it was time for a change. Bits and pieces will change to the template over the next while. Temp placeholders for the moment for title and sidebar stuff...

Doing some real artwork lately. I mean the physical type you can touch. You really can't beat using real material. So to all who drop by regularly, I'll be posting frequently pretty soon.

Happy Friday

Happy Friday everyone. Thanks to all those who visited at APE. You make my day when I meet you and find out that you read my blog! Glad the heavy rain didn't stop you guys and girls on Saturday.

I was very happy to share my table with Corey Bass, a wonderful pastel artist with his own comic. I also had the pleasure of sitting next to Audra Ann Furuichi and Scott Yoshinaga from NEMU-NEMU. What a great and cute all ages comic. Get their plushies while they last!

So thanks for the support. It's so good to share my 3D images with a new city in person.

Totoro Forest Project Book

WOW.

Let me say that again.

WOW.

If you can score a copy of the book, please try to do it soon as I know they are running out quickly. Check in on the Totoro Forest Project Blog for info on where it might be still available. I can't even begin to describe what a joy this book is.

I just received my comp copy (thanks for dropping it down Andrea) and seeing the reactions from my kids as we go through the book together is utterly priceless. Their world has just been expanded by an infinite degree thanks to all the participating artists.
Again, it was a complete honor to be a part of this cause.

Cheers Dice, Enrico, Ronnie, Yukino and the whole project team that organized the event.

More Brush Pens On The Market

Here's a sheet just for fun while testing out the new Prismacolor Premier Brush Pens. It will be hard to drag me away from my trusty Pitt Brush Pens though. I love the Prismacolor pencils, so it's good to see them offering colored brush pens. They do have pretty thin barrels on them compared to the Pitt pens which might take a bit of getting used to. Either way, I'm more concerned with what comes out of the tip of them.

Hello all. Thanks so much for the book orders. For all those on an RSS feed, you can get to the paypal button on the sidebar of the blog. I really appreciate the support and the great reaction the book is getting.

I never put the above image up on my site, even though a few of you may have seen it on the web. So to put that right, there it is. Hooray! As usual, to see it in 3D, just follow my 3D Instructions.

DEPTH CHARGE, 3D ILLUSIONS

DEPTH CHARGE, 3D ILLUSIONS NOW AVAILABLE!!!
Hooray!
All pre-orders have shipped and are on their merry way. Oh, and they also contain a little extra something :)

So to celebrate the online release, FOR ONE WEEK ONLY, ending MIDNIGHT, SEPT 2nd 08, if you order from me ONLY with the paypal button on the side bar, not only will you get a drawing on the inside page, you will receive a random couple of my new DAYDREAMER CARDS with your shiny new purchase.....

Yup, give your eyes a breather and place 'em where you need to to get those eye muscles working for ya.

It's also available on Amazon.com (WITHOUT the special daydreamer offer) here.
For anyone who already has the book, don't hesitate to write an honest review on Amazon. Word of mouth is starting to grow and I'm really surprised how much of a social book it has turned out to be. The couple of shipments I made have already sold in pre-order. Not to worry. I've just sent a new shipment to them, so if it shows up as temporarily out of stock, it should only be a few days until they have it back in.

Enjoy the book my friends.

Thank You Comic Con

What an amazing Comic con. Thank you all so much for your support and wishes. I really appreciate it especially if you came looking for me. I met so many artists at this convention that I have admired for years. It was a pleasure to meet you all.

The best part of working a table was helping everyone see the images. I had heard that about 95 percent of people had the ability to see stereo once the knew how. I had no idea how this would be received as it's kind of a stretch. That statistic turned out to be quite true. With a short explanation, a few puzzled faces that quickly turned into a smile when it clicked, was all it took. I got some amazing reactions from some. I wish I had it on camera.

Thanks also to Cartoon Brew for the mention.
A bunch of you found me because of that post. I'm going to catch my breath after the hectic week. In the meantime here's another 3D image for you. Instructions to see this are HERE .

I'll have some extra gear with me which I haven't told anyone about yet, so swing on by and you'll be one of the first to know. I'll post about it after the Comic Con has finished for all those that can't make it. What could it be?

Totoro Forest Project

There has been a secret project going on for the last while called the TOTORO FOREST PROJECT which I an very happy to be part of and we are now allowed to share the info with you. This is an unbelievable collection of over 200 international artists joining together the help spread the word in an effort to preserve Sayama Forest, also known as Totoro Forest. Hayao Miyazaki used this forest as an inspiration for "Totoro".

Above is my contribution to the project. How does this work? Well there will be an auction held at Pixar on the 6th of Sept 2008, and the best thing is that ALL of the proceeds will be donated to the Totoro Forest Foundation. Fantastic. There will also be a book produced collecting all the artwork involved in the project. Please help in saving this very special place.

This amazing project was spearheaded by Dice Tsutsumi, Enrico Casarosa, and Ronnie del Carmen. You'll be hearing a lot about this project over the next while. The artwork is spectacular and you can see it in the gallery section of the TOTORO FOREST PROJECT. It should be an incredible auction. Please help spread the word about this.

Live Color, 3D Color Mixing

Thank you so much for the comments and the emails I got over the last few days. I can feel the moment it clicked for you and that makes me really happy. Thanks also to Drawn! for spreading the news. Glad to have you here if you headed over from this great site.

Well, I promised you in the last post that the 3D illustrations wouldn't be the only thing I've been doing with my work. Want to see some colors you've never seen before? So here's the kicker. You don't need color to be premixed for you. Your mind can do it, and it will look alive and vibrant as the left and right side of your brain piece it together.

If you missed the last post, a simple 3 STEPS will get you on the right track to see my images in 3D. More info after the pic.....

Who knew you could have so much fun with a copyright notice. 3D and color mixing. That will add some life to it.

The new book "Depth Charge, 3D Illusions" contains a bunch of color mixing 3D illustrations. This one is an easier one to get started on.
There are still some surprises in the book so drop by my table B8 at the San Diego Comic Con and I'll show you.

That's not all. The next post will have info on some of the goodies I'll be bringing with me.

3D Illustration

Hey friends, I've been waiting a long time to share this with you and I couldn't be more excited about it. Now you'll know what I've been up to lately.

Imagine this....What if you could see an image in 3D without the need for 3D glasses?

When was the last time you looked at an illustration or painting?

I mean REALLY looked at it and experienced the artwork by getting completely lost in it? My new book "DEPTH CHARGE, 3D Illusions" does just that. It will debut at the Comic Con in San Diego (table B8). With this book you will be able to experience the images contained in it not as images on a flat surface, but you will perceive them as if they exist in space. You can pre-order it HERE.
You will also be able to get it directly through me in a short while at SCULLERY PRESS.

"What? Did you just.....what?"

I've spent the last while breaking through the boundaries of the page and finally I can tell you about it. Above is one of the images from the book, an easy one to get you started with, and I hope you get the same feeling I did when I first created 3D Illustration.

One of the most important things I learned when I started animating was to think of the page, not as a flat surface, but rather a cube that you have to sculpt an object out of with your pencil. When you learn to see the images in my book, your mind will see things like a multi-plane camera, and you'll be able to explore the space contained within the image and be able to jump from one area to another.

Now I don't usually write too much in this blog, so to keep things easy to digest, here's a "Quick Start" guide to seeing the 3D illustrations. Yeah, I know, who ever knew you would need a quick start guide for a illustration book. I'll leave the long version inside the book, but this should get you up and running for the moment. As usual, click on the images for a bigger version.

Okay. At first it's just a little tricky to get the hang of, and it will feel really odd at the start, but once you "get" it, you REALLY get it. Here's some tips....

When you look past the image and can feel that there are three images, just think of the one in the middle as if it was a real image or object. Shift your focus to that
middle image (you'll still see three images, but that's the one you're to look at.)

If the middle image is a little blurry at first, it should come into focus after a short time. Once it does, it will jump off the page both in front and behind the image plane.

The longer you look at it, the more your eye can look around the image and jump through the space.

The further away from the image you are, the more depth there will be. Sit back in your chair to give you more visual space.

That first Eureka moment will never be forgotten. Now if you can see the image above in 3D and think that that is cool, just wait for my next post. I've got more surprises for you, and the next one will hopefully blow you away.

So, if you've gotten down this far, here's what the book looks like. 56 pages of
3D goodness. I'll let you know next time what to expect on the inside pages.

Jason Ryan Animation

Nice to share this. It's always good news when your friends do something really cool. My pal just set up this great site where he gives tutorials to learn how to animate. Who wants to learn from a pro? Jason Ryan supervised at Disney and is now currently doing the same at Dreamworks.
When I was learning to animate traditionally, I was looking over the shoulders of my mentors. Getting training from a pro working in the biz is one of the best things that you can do. Jason has put together a program which takes you through the process not only traditionally, but also translates that info into computer animation giving examples of both. Check out what some of the tutorials contain. The clarity of explanation is why Jason is such a great teacher and he packs in the info into the tutorials. Click on the image to take you there.....

Scrambled Ink

The best thing about this time of year is that I know my friends are putting their books together. Exciting times. I've just seen a copy of "Scrambled Ink" from my storyboard pals at Dreamworks. It's due to be out in July. Can't wait to get my hands on my own copy. And who are the lads and lassie behind this book?.....Jenny Lerew, Dave Pimentel, Ken Morrissey,
Keith Baxter, J.J. Villard, Dave Derrick, and Ennio Torresan.
Spread the word. Story Artists doing their own books is something to look forward to this year. It's available for pre-order HERE
and HERE.
You'll be seeing it on the shelves soon. This gem is brought to you by Darkhorse.

Early Summer

Wow, locally it's getting hot already. Stay cool if you live around here. Nice nighttimes though.

So there's some changes going on around here. Last week there were a few glitches as I switched over this blog to my own domain name. All the links should be redirected, but just in case you want to update your bookmarks, the new url is www.thedalyblog.com.

Also I'm really happy to say that my new cards are now available at the great
Lula Mae (voted Best Boutique in Pasadena), located in the heart of Pasadena at 100 North Fair Oaks Avenue. It's one fab store to browse around for gifts, cards and all kinds of accessories. Ask for the Scullery Press cards if you drop in. Look for my new logo which you can find in my profile picture. Yeah, I know, I don't look anything like that. Well, that's the new logo for Scullery Press. Let the branding begin.

Best thing about the cards is that they're like prints, but smaller, so check them out if you're in the Pasadena area.

Production Time

Here's one from a short while ago. You really can't beat Venice Beach. Summer's getting ready. Time to chill with the roller skaters.

So one of the reasons things have been slow here is because I'm spending time producing physical work these days. Why? 'Cos I like getting things off the computer and into the physical world. Especially if it's printed on really high quality paper. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
As well as that, there are some real pieces in the works too. Time is not on my side.

Here's a taste below. Scullery Press is where I'll be making all my printable work available. Here's a pic to give you an idea of what's going on.....

Eye Candy From Strangers

Heads up!!!! Get them HERE before they are all gone. I believe these are flying off the shelves of Brand Studio Press. Be sure to get yours early in the Comic Con season or even better, secure your copies before they disappear.

Alberto has done it yet again with his wonderful books and this time he has brought together a large section of talent who love to draw ladies for the first two books and more books are planned. I'm honored to have one of my most minimal images in the second volume. It was a happy day when I got them in the mailbox.

Putting the new book together is fun, but it's stopping me from posting here like I used to. The good news is that it's in the home stretch and I'm prepping it for print right now. Got some time today to go to a gesture class at lunch. Here's a quick sample. That's Melissa above.

New Year

Brand new year. Time to start posting again. Thanks for checking in. How come I've been away? Well, I've been quietly putting a new book together, and instead of posting the images here, you'll just have to wait to see them in printed form. I wanted to put a book together of mostly unseen work. Hopefully it will be worth the wait. I'll be playing catch up, so here's one from not so long ago.
