From the Vault

A couple of years ago, there was a flood in my place and I lost a whole bunch of artwork, scribbles, doodles etc. Crap time. Last weekend I had a bit of time to get some stuff in order. Tucked away on a shelf, hidden from view, was a stack of doodles and half thoughts made on a couple of hundred sheets of copy paper that for some reason I had put up there and forgotten about. Inadvertantly, this misplacement saved them from the water and being chucked in the bin. Happy to find them, I'll post some of them up here. I'll just add a couple of images every day to this post all this week.
I was talking to Jenny from The Blackwing Diaries about how cool it is to see thought process in drawings, and how someone searches for a pose and how great it is to see scribbles and doodles which reveal a process or thoughts or unfinished half thoughts on the art bogs. I love it. I've always preferred the ruff drawings in animation. So here are some of mine. No rhyme or reason other than a wandering pen let loose on the paper looking for shape differences or just exploring a character.. The best thing about this, is that doing these types sketches for me helped me get a more confident line. If a sketch doesn't work, it doesn't matter. I learnt from the mistakes and moved on. So here we go......

Cheers Martin. good to see you.

Yes, this is where it all started from. I still do these type of drawings, but I've only posted the illustrator ones lately. Glad you like 'em.

Ryan, I've loads of fun doing these.
Years of doodling these kind of drawings.

Thanks J, yes I like to keep them simple and clear. Thanks for dropping by.

Hey Paco, I hope that's a good thing.

Cheers Justin, yeah, I've always liked the contrast in the shapes.

These are great sketches and doodles! I'm glad they survived the flood. And I've always preferred the rough animation drawings to the final line stuff ever since I got into the biz. There is something about seeing how the artist is searching for the shape and form.

Great stuff!

ooooh!! i often feel we shouldnt clean up our drawings anyway...make that into a style as well...you can NEVER get the drawing again in a clean up..
lovely stuff!!!
