Hooray! The store is open for business. So, fresh off the press, now you can get your gear here. It's great to see some of the images from this blog on actual physical items. I just got a bunch of these and was really happy to see the results. So, I hope you like it too. I will be updating the store as I go along, and I'll let you know when new items are in. Hope you enjoy them.
If you have any favourite images from this blog that aren't in the store, let me know and I'll try and get them up there if the image size suits the needs of the printing process. I won't be doing prints just yet, but I'll keep you updated on that. I've also added the link in the sidebar. Hooray for international shipping.
Happy shopping everyone.
Oh, and here is today's image....

And here is todays offering to the cartoon gods.

Trials and tribulations. Haha, this was painful.
For some reason, this one took forever to do. Some days you just can't get into the flow and other days it rolls off the pencil or tablet pen. Fortunately, I'm a persistant bugger, and finally I solved the drawing problems. Times like that really makes you question every single line to make sure it's in the right place. I do that subconsiously anyway, and I know where to place the lines even before I put them down, but sometimes my hand doesn't do what I can see in my mind. It's a good feeling though when you finally get it right.

And sometimes you just can't help doing a stark black and white.

Experimenting again. This is a way different look to things I've done previously.

Well... I put down a couple of lines and this is where it lead to.
Made me laugh, so here you go. It's not all elegant here.

Variations on a theme. A musical approach.

So I've had some really cool comments about the lines in my work. I'm so glad you like them. For me, when I started learning about animation, the way I looked at lines changed drastically. I saw some incredible cleanup work where it completely baffled me how someone could get a jet black line out of a regular old pencil. Not only that, but the lines would be beautiful. Tapered in all the right places. When it was done right, the drawings were stunning. (I've also seen some horrible clean up that just sucked the life out of a drawing). Studying animation, lines of action through a body took over from just seeing the lines themselves. It changed everything. Seeing what was beneath the lines tied everything together. All the little tilts of the head, shoulder and hip relationships suddenly made sense. So even though these physical lines are clean, it's really what I see underneath that ties it together.
I still think that ruffs have so much more life to them. You can't take the animator out of me. What I'm trying to do here is create a ruff with clean lines if that makes any sense. Just concentrating on the bare essentials of what's needed to show a pose.
Enough rambling. Here's todays offering.

For Illustration Friday. Everyone should have a pair of glamour glasses. Well, maybe not, but it seems to make this girl happy.

Back to ruff sketches again today. Still love the feeling of putting pen to paper.

Yikes, this one took forever to do. When you see an image in your head and you just can't get the lines right, it can be a right pain. Just as well I'm a persistant bugger. Getting around problems and defining what is actually wrong can take a whole bunch of time. Finally this appeared out of simplifying all the shapes.

Chicken Caesar is a project I started a while ago. It had been put on hold for far too long. So rather than let it languish in unseen obscurity, I thought I'd show you some work from it. It's a computer animation short and I wanted it to look like the sketches in the colour illustration below. It will give you an idea of what I was looking to achieve. Unfortunately, time is an enemy. I may get to complete it one day. I may just do it traditionally instead. We'll see what happens. Right now I'll just tease you with some images. Chicken, dog, egg. That's what the story is wrapped around.

Pushing shapes around again. Here's a variety of different styles. It really depends on which way I feel like drawing at the time I do them. I much prefer to see an energetic ruff than a polished drawing. In a way that frees you up to explore and push shapes around. You can always go back in and tighten everything up, but most time I just leave it alone.

So I can't say how important it is to look at work done in the past an learn from that. Here are a couple of more links of work that I oogle over.
Heinrich Kley, probably one of the finest examples of penmanship around and absolutly one of my favourate artists. (you do have to click around a little on the site to see inside the books).
And there is also this site I came accross recently Paul Giambarba called 100 Years of Illustration, an incredible resourse which makes you want to search more for more work from the artists he has presented.
There you go , have fun. Good studying.

So a few of my co workers started their own blogs too. These are the latest to join the art bloggers. If you haven't noticed them on my sidebar links, send over some love to them. All of them are avid sketchers. Nice to know in this computer age that these guys are still drawing. Here's the links....
Insert Name Here which is comprised of Fabio Lignini, Luis Grane, Jakob Jensen, Arnaud Berthier, Simon Otto.
Alessandro Carloni
Gabriele Pennacchioli
Also here's a couple of other links that I've been looking at lately who have been a great inspiration to me is....
scribblettes is a second blog by Alberto Ruiz and
symptomatica by Ragnar.
All incredible work. Hope you like them.
And today I'm taking a different set of lines out for a walk.

Hmmmm, I wonder which is which? The old brush pen back in action. Things have gotten busy over the last few days, therefore the lack of posts. I may slightly decrease the amount of posts I put up because I need time to research and study in order to move forward. Learning takes time and it will eat into my posting a bit, but it's all for the sake of improving, so forgive me in advance. Besides, I also need time to look at all your excellent work too.
